Abbey and Taylor’s Bridals/Groomals

I seem to say it very frequently these days, but I just had so much fun with this couple. I easily had the most fun shooting this couple that I have ever had. They are happy, super stylish people, and are great in front of a camera. Abbey’s mom is a photographer, and so Abbey and her siblings pretty much came out of the womb knowing how to smile and pose for photos.

I was also super impressed with how poised Abbey and Taylor were under all the stress surrounding the wedding preparations. We had to postpone the first bride and groom session because the alterations place LOST ABBEY’S DRESS (like, gone-no-more-to-be-found lost), so they had to get an identical dress (which happened to be 2 or 3 sizes too big) and alter it to fit her. Then the day we were supposed to shoot it snowed (late May in Utah? par for the course I guess), necessitating another delay. By now it was the week before the wedding, and my week was almost completely booked. We shifted some things around, got it scheduled and showed up for the shoot. Of course, right as we start, Taylor’s tuxedo jacket button pops off. It was just one thing after another, and you would not know it to look at these photos.

We shot at the Tahitian Noni Gardens, aka’d as the Morinda Gardens, and I tell you- if I could go back in time and redo my wedding, I would want a dress and veil like Abbey’s. They were both stunning, and so was she.

I love how the colors in this one turned out.

I could have shot in these gardens all day…

After the gardens though, we headed over to a private property owned by a friend of Abbey’s family. It was a beautiful location.

We got some really lovely colors in the sky when the sun set.

And then the moon rose… life was good.

Studio Day Minipost #6- Baby Lindy (Hop)

I first met Alan and Lexi at a local dance event (actually, it was all part of the same dance community where I met Thomas). We both danced Lindy Hop, a classic social dance that started in the 20s and 30s and is still going strong today. It’s also the form of dance known for “exchanges”, a wonderful tradition where dancers fly or drive to cities (often across the country) with other dance communities and stay up all night for several days to dance nonstop. Aside from being an excuse to take road trips and dress up in vintage clothes with people as crazy as you are, the idea is that dancing with people from all different places, with all different styles, will make you a better dancer. Lindy Hoppers like to dance anywhere, with anyone, as much as possible, so even when there wasn’t an exchange to attend, Alan went dancing at local venues every week. It was at another venue here in Utah that he met Lexi, who originally started out primarily dancing West Coast swing, before she got hooked on Lindy Hop. They got married and shortly thereafter they had a beautiful little girl. Although I’m always thrilled to have more babies to shoot, something was extra great about this one. Really, what is more appropriate a name for the daughter of two passionate Lindy Hop dancers than “Lindy”?

She is beautiful.

So is her mom.

This may not be a vintage skirt, but she does look excited about the whole dancing-exchange-road-trip idea. She definitely has the sleep deprivation thing down.

By the way, I promise that while I love crying babies, this is not intentional.

Really.

(But it is darling.)

Is it bad that I want to pack her up in this and run away with her?

I won’t though, I guess.

Studio Day Minipost #4- Baby Bridger

Aaaaand a little over a month after the actual event, I’m still finishing up these mini-posts from the studio photography day. I thought by keeping them “mini” I’d get them done faster. No dice. Between the preparations for the Provo Bridal Fair last Saturday and all the engagement and bridal shoots for the weddings that are coming up in May and June, I’ve been swamped! le sigh…

Anyways, here are a few photos of little baby Bridger. He is the new addition to Liz Chapman’s family, and this is actually the third time I have taken photos of him. I took photos of him as a newborn as well as before he was even named! By the by, you can click here for the full gallery.

I love the lighting in this one, and how he’s just curled up in the basket with Teddy…

I’ve said it before, but I love love love baby photos where they are crying or in some kind of distress. Should I be concerned about this? :)

Lina’s older brother Xander came along and wanted his photo taken…. he was pretty happy about seeing all the flashes go off.

Studio Day Minipost #2- Baby Zoey

I took photos of Zoey last year when she was just a month or two old, and I almost didn’t recognize her! She has gotten so big…. but she is still one of the absolute most photogenic children that I have ever come across. She was a dream to shoot, and it was really hard to narrow down the photos we got from the session to just five or six favorites for this post.

A day in the studio- March 13

Ok, so here’s the deal. We’re going to be running a special studio photography day, with 30 minute sessions for $50 (more than a 50% disount) all day Saturday March 13th. That means that for just $50, you will get time with an amazingly talented photographer, and a CD of high resolution photos. Tell your friends, family, frenemies, hair stylists- everyone! … then send me an email at whitneylewisphotography@gmail.com to schedule your own session.

What you get:

A 30 minute photo session of Maternity, Newborn, Child, Individual or Group portrait photos. Groups limited to 3 people. We can also do a head shot session, which are a little different- see below for details.
30 edited photos, on a high resolution DVD
A warm fuzzy feeling knowing that you got a wicked awesome deal. You’ll be able to brag later, I promise.

What to do:

Arrive on time. If you are late, it will affect the quality and number of photos I will be able to provide.
Bring favorite blankets, toys, props, hats, etc. I have a lot of props myself, but if you have something you think would be cool or something that would express your personality, be sure and bring it!
Come to the right address- 2016 Nuttall Dr, Lehi UT 84043. Go the the door down the driveway on the side and ring the doorbell.
Come ready to have fun and get some amazing pictures taken!

What not to do:

Arrive late. Seriously, don’t do it. :)
Bring your family reunion. That’s just too many people.
Bring a knife to a gun fight.

A recent shoot I did in my studio was a head shot session for Kelli, a candidate for Miss Utah. My head shot sessions are a little different than standard portrait sessions- they include 5 different photos, but I do a lot more on the editing above and beyond the standard portraits. Kelly needed a few different photos for the promotion of the pageant, including a few wearing a crown! (a first for me, i admit)

Slevin’s Baby Photos

We had planned to take these baby pictures outside, however due to Utah’s crazy Fall weather (warm one day, freezing rain the next) we ended up doing the photoshoot inside at my studio. Slevin was a wonderfully cute subject, and had some really great smiles. It’s interesting doing infant photography, however, in that you don’t just let them play and document their natural poses and actions (my preferred method with small kids). As they aren’t fully capable of moving themselves around, it is an exercise in creativity and flexibility in coming up with new ideas and poses that work for each baby. I love searching out new concepts with this area of photography though! It makes me excited to take pictures of my own kids someday.

Baby Zoey and Family

This baby is one of the most adorable infants I have ever come across. She is incredibly expressive, and was tons of fun to shoot. I first saw Zoey in Five Guys in Orem (love their burgers) while waiting for our order, and got to talking with her dad when I told him how cute she was. I mentioned I was a photographer, and I love taking pictures of kids, and he took my card. I was thrilled when I received an email several weeks later requesting a shoot. Zoey was just as cute as I remembered from the restaurant, and we got some wonderful photos of her and her family. Unfortunately, it was a colder day than we anticipated, and so Zoey kept sticking her hands in her mouth to warm them up. :)

I was especially pleased with this shoot, as I was able to use my latest find in the search for props- a tea cup from the lawn and garden section of Walmart.

Liz’s Maternity Shoot

We got Liz’s maternity shoot done up above Sundance right before all the really vivid Fall colors in Utah apparently decided to disappear. She brought her son Hunter along, and he was wonderful with helping out Mom by holding different changes of clothing. We managed to get some nice “almost-a-big-brother” pictures with Hunter as well.

I was especially exited to hear that Liz found me through Google just by searching “Utah Maternity Photography”. My husband Thomas has been diligently making improvements to my website and my blog trying to make it more search engine friendly, and so it’s great to see that it seems to be working. Plus, it’s always wonderful when new clients contact me out of the blue and say “I found your work and I love it!”

I love how Liz’s photos turned out, even though it makes me slightly sick that someone can be so close to giving birth and still look as incredibly thin and fit as she does. I mean, there’s a baby in there!!! :)
