Zmoos Wedding- Salt Lake City

One of the top reasons I liked working with Abbey and Taylor is even when things went wrong, sometimes disastrously so, they were still so pleasant and happy. They had had some fairly large hurdles to overcome with their formal session and as the day of the wedding came things seemed to continue in that same vein.

Abbey and Taylor had extended family in town for the weekend, and apparently some of the nieces came bearing gifts in the form of plague. The little Typhoid Marys kindly shared a nice violent flu with everyone in the family, including the bride, a few days before the big day itself. Although Abbey was mostly feeling better by the morning of the wedding, on the way to the Salt Lake Temple she had an allergic reaction to something, and her eye swelled almost completely shut (fortunately a temporary situation!). Later, about halfway through the newlywed photos, Taylor’s tux coat button popped off for the second time. Finally, someone accidentally spilled water over one of their favorite enlargements from the bridal session, right before the reception was due to begin. Despite this and the normal stress and craziness that come part and parcel in a wedding day, Abbey and Taylor were both happy, smiling, and thoroughly in love. It was extraordinary, and they were awesome!

I thought this was precious….

You got to be careful with a whole bunch of groomsman who are bigger than you. Crazy stuff happens. ;)

Zmoos Reception at Sleepy Ridge

Now don’t tell any of my other brides this (shhhh!), but I think that Abbey and Taylor’s wedding day was the most enjoyable and satisfying day in my career as a photographer thus far. The bride and groom were both knockouts in the looks department, the families were a joy to deal with, and everyone looked fantastic. This reception was lovely. The reception hall at Sleepy Ridge is absolutely gorgeous, and Abbey and her family had obviously put a LOT of thought into the decorations. The food was wonderful, they had a live band (which I always love), and there were so many people. Abbey’s family is very well established in the area, and so the place was just packed to the rafters.

DJ’s can be wonderful, but as I’ve said before, live bands are my favorite. I met Thomas through the swing dance scene here in Utah, and we both still love to dance when we can. The fact that most live wedding bands lean towards jazz and other “danceable” music (at least as we think of it), it always makes it more fun for me. This group was great to listen to.

I love crepes, and I especially love crepes that come along with huge fireballs.

The entire wedding party looked great, but I must say, the boys had something special going on.

It was a beautiful evening, all the way around.

The wedding cake was outstanding, but I think I had a special place in my heart for the groom’s cake- as a rock climber, I thought it was perfect. :)

Rehearsal Dinners

I like rehearsal dinners. They are a great chance to meet the wedding party ahead of time, so that we can be more comfortable with each other on the wedding day, there’s usually really good food, and I get to hear stories about the bride and groom that usually don’t come up other times. Abbey and Taylor’s family are very funny people, and shared a lot of stories about the happy couple that had the whole room laughing. One in particular stuck in my mind as a good example of the type of person Abbey is. She was about 12 and was extremely excited to go to a summer camp. Now Abbey is such a gracious person and she was so sure that she would have a wonderful time that she wrote individual thank you letters to each of the counselors to express how much fun she had….. weeks before the camp even started.

We got to see what kind of person Taylor is as well. I’ll just say this, it takes a very secure man to get up in front of couple hundred people as sing “Realize” by Colbie Caillat to his bride to be. It was, however, very sweet.

Sunshine, Smiles, Sunsets, and FIREWORKS!

For the fourth of july, we decided to take advantage of the opportunity for some pretty neat backgrounds and scheduled Brooklyn and Kagan’s formals for the evening. We planned to take some normal photos at a couple of different spots in Springville that we had scouted out, and then play around when it got dark to see what we could get with the fireworks. A half an hour before the shoot Thomas and I decided to go get some smaller fireworks of our own to play around with between sunset and the fireworks show. I am so glad that we did! We got a great variety of photos, but some of the “small firework” photos are my favorites.

In light of the upcoming state holiday this saturday, I figured I would get these firework photos up now and share them with you all… :) (For all my out-of-state readers, the 24th of July is “Pioneer Day”, which essentially comes out to a second fourth where people barbeque, set off more fireworks, and have lots of parades. As for me, I think any excuse to blow things up and see pretty colors is perfectly fine.)

We really lucked out- before the sunset we got some wonderful daylight photos. Not too harsh, some nice backlighting, and enough direct light to manipulate to my heart’s content.

Something about this one just makes me smile…

Now you’re probably thinking as you look at these next photos “Oh wow, Whitney must have enhanced the colors on that sunset- no way that is real.” However, if you were to think that, you would be WRONG. wrongwrongwrong. I can say with absolute honesty that this sunset was just as incredible as it looks. If fact, I think I actually decreased the saturation of the colors a smidge. It was unbelievable.

And now that the sunset is over, we get to play…. :D

Brooklyn is a big fan of Harry Potter- I think it shows…

Bean Wedding

Natalie and David got married in the Bountiful LDS temple, and had a reception in a local chapel. This couple (and family) was so laid back- it was a breeze to shoot them. I love when it feels like I am just hanging out with my clients, documenting them having fun on their own, without it needing to feel overly posed or forced.

Jenny and Josh

I love doing bride and groom shoots (or “groomals”) before the wedding. You get to pick the time and place, ensuring interesting locations and good lighting, and you can always reschedule if you have to because of bad weather. In this case, I was glad we did a formal shoot of Jenny and Josh as we ended up getting some rain on the wedding day, and because of the previous shoot didn’t have to stress too much about it. We took a couple of photos, and headed on out.

Shelby and Steve- the saga continues…

On March 27th Shelby and Steve, having been officially pronounced Mr. and Mrs. Law, continued their streak of downright miraculous meteorological good fortune. I’ve blogged before about how things just seemed to work out perfectly for their engagements and Shelby’s bridals and how we got exactly the weather we needed when we needed it. Well, this one took the cake.

While we had had some spotty bad weather up in Utah County the day before, we figured it would probably be warmer and nice and clear down in Manti. Driving 100 miles south should count for something, right? We had an early morning ceremony, and so as we were driving along still half-asleep we didn’t really pay too much attention to the surroundings. As we got closer, we started noticing with surprise and a little bit of alarm that everything was covered in snow. …A lot of snow. The roads were iced over, and it was looking a lot more like the beginning of January than the end of March. We get closer and about 30 miles out the skies are completely black, with huge dark clouds EVERYWHERE. We get about 25 miles away and it starts snowing like crazy. We’re talking full-on heavy snowstorm here. 16 miles out and it’s still black skies and snow everywhere you can see. Now we’re getting a bit nervous.

Then, somewhere in the last 10 miles or so, we see the smallest speck of blue. As we continue, it gets bigger and bigger. Finally, in the very last mile before we get there, the sky is completely clear. In fact, it is some of the bluest, most beautiful skyline I have ever seen, with huge puffy white clouds interspersed. Not only is there no snow on the ground, but the grass is green, and the roads are bone-dry. The only hint of the weather north of us is a breeze that admittedly feels like the icy touch of death itself. I’m serious, that wind was just lazy- instead of going all the way around you, it just took the short route and went right through you. But the point is, everything looked gorgeous! And with photos, that’s all that really matters, isn’t it? ;)

I tell you… these two be living right. Somebody up there must really like them to go three-for-three with the awesome weather.

This is what we got. Other people get snow, we get perfection.

Hubbard Reception- Down the rabbit hole we go…

All right, as promised, here are a few favorites of mine from the reception. Aaaaand as expected, the post is about a month later than I expected, so I am backdating the post to make it seem like I am more on the ball than I really am. Bwahahaha!

Hubbard Wedding- Adventurers Welcome

Hail and well met! If any of you brave souls be looking for a dangerous quest to test your mettle… you would probably fit right in here. After all, what do you get when you combine a Renaissance Fair, Pagan ceremony, Scottish traditions, and a Wedding? A collection of photos that are generally anything but run-of-the-mill. As promised, here are a few photos from Ian and Sara’s “mythology” themed wedding. It was a lot of fun to shoot, and there are a lot of really interesting photos in the different galleries. If you are feeling impatient, you can jump straight to the full galleries on Smugmug here. I’ll put a few of my favorite photos from the ceremony and the group and newlywed sessions here. (editor’s note: a “few” turned out to be a lot. sorry about the super long post. my sympathies if you are on dial-up) A few photos from the reception will follow in a later post. You’ll be sure to want to check those out, as a lot of folks didn’t dress up for the ceremony, only to later show up to the reception in style.

Here we got the groom all decked out. I can’t for the life of me remember his clan though….

♫ “Here comes the bride! ….. accompanied by her father who is giving her away, while still holding his glass of scotch.” ♫ I loved it. It completely fit the feel of the day. Everybody was relaxed and ready to enjoy themselves.

And now the ceremonial knot-tying of the wrists…. presumably to make sure nobody gets cold feet and runs away? ;)

And the guests begin to trickle in to the reception… Every time I saw this guy on the left for the rest of the night, the only thing I could think of was “Mahwagge… Mahwagge is waht bwings us togehvah, today.”

We didn’t get a chance to do bridals for Sara, so we took a few minutes away between the ceremony and the reception to take a few photos of her and her husband.

Sara designed her own dress and had it custom-made. It’s easily the most unique dress I’ve ever seen- gorgeous too!

Farmer Wedding- Newlyweds

Justin and Jeanine Farmer had a beautiful wedding day… the weather was just perfect (well, perfect enough considering it was January). I love it when couples ask me to be there all day, because it gives us the time to get a lot of variety in the photos. We started at the Bountiful temple after their sealing, they had a nice luncheon at a sushi place in Murray, and then we were able to skip on over to Wheeler farm for an hour or so before the reception. It’s not often that we have a chance to shoot the wedding couple on the wedding day during the last hours of sunlight (my favorite time to shoot)- more often than not the schedule of the wedding day doesn’t allow for it. So I was very pleased we were able to go to Wheeler Farm for the extended newlywed session. The location and the fact that they are “Farmers” did make me giggle a bit though. :D

Here are a few favorites from the photos outside the temple and at Wheeler Farm. I’ll get some reception photos in a later post.
